Teaching Philosophy

There is a great deal of responsibility that comes with teaching and one must be fully aware of that responsibility.  I have only to reflect back upon my own experience with teachers to see who inspired me to take the next step, to explore, to be creative, and to try new things.  Those teachers encouraged and inspired me; they believed that I could do whatever I set out to do.

I believe that I am that kind of educator. I am the one who says, “of course, you can,” “I don’t know, let’s try it and see,” “that is a really good idea,” and “why not”?  I like to encourage my students to try new things, to help each other, to share ideas and suggestions, and to be supportive of one another.  I encourage my students to take risks. Making mistakes by taking risks are the only way we learn and that can be a good thing.  There are lots of “happy accidents” in the art room and I encourage these moments to become something other than what was intended.  Some amazing things come from these moments if they are embraced as opportunities rather than disappointments.

I also believe that creating and fostering a classroom community is as equally important as the curriculum.  Building trust, respectfulness, playfulness, and collaboration are important components of a creative and fun learning environment.  I spend a lot of time fostering a safe and trusting community, in which we can depend on one another, ask each other for help, and provide honest and respectful feedback and suggestions.  One of my favorite things about making art is the collaborative aspect of it and a community must be created in which to do so.

Art provides the conditions for awakening to the world around us.  In this sense, the arts provide a way of knowing.  Elliot W. Eisner
